Twilight Twitches

fetscherDear Family,
Here we are on Easter weekend. We hear the wonderful echoes of the Easter Vigil service with the new fire, the Easter candle and the blessing of the new water that recalls our own immersion into the Body of Christ (even if someone poured a little stream over our heads.) We heard Paul ask the Romans,

“Are you unaware that we who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? ...indeed buried with him through baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead ...we too might live in newness of life?”

Then on Easter Sunday morning comes Peter’s almost explosive testimony (which came after the experience of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost):

“God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power.
He went about doing good and healing all those oppressed by the devil...
for God was with him. We Are Witnesses!    ... This man God raised on the third day.”

The witness of the apostles wasn’t just to the resurrection of Jesus. It was also to all the things in his historical ministry that said, as He said, “My Father loves you, and he has gone to the ultimate length to prove it with all I am saying and doing.”

In our translation of the Bible, the new American Bible, Revised edition, Acts 10:39, there’s a reveal¬ing footnote about the witness of the disciples to Jesus:

...the Twelve, divinely mandated as prophets, were empowered to interpret his sayings and deeds in the light of his redemptive death and resurrection. The  meaning of these words and deeds was to be made clear to the developing Christian community as the bearer of the word of salvation.  (my underlining.)
There it is. The flow from the Lord to us. How privileged we are. We Are Witnesses!

Welcome to all our visitors who may be hearing this amazing message for the first time. Welcome to those who haven’t heard it in a while.

Why are you here today? Family blackmail? Easier to switch than fight? Wonder what they do?
Whatever the reason,

What is it I hope you’ll hear and see? Am I implying some sort of subtext that says you are “a wretch” as Amazing Grace tells us? Welcome to the club. No, I hope you are hearing and experiencing the message that you are completely and unconditionally loved. The message is delivered by the way we worship, the way we hear God’s word, the way we treat each other. My hope for me and you is that when we let that unconditional love pour over us, we are not left with any options that seem right except to love all the unlovable around us. After all, We Are Witnesses!

Sometimes, after I write words like the foregoing, I pause. I wonder if I can love the unlovable. But I’m stuck with what I wrote, almost not really appreciating the words until after they are on the page. That’s when I realize I’m just an instrument. But as an instrument I need to practice what I preach (write.) That’s original, isn’t it?

My Easter wish for all of you is that the Risen Lord will do sneaky good things for you, too.
In Him,
