Dear Family,
Just “because we’ve always done it this way” is one of those phrases that’s been used to end conversations and drive people nuts. I “always” write a Twitch.
I just came from St. Thomas Aquinas high school where the students were taking advantage of having priests come for the sacrament of Reconciliation. The kids I met were really impressive.
I knew I had to get home asap because I had not written this letter and the deadline comes at noon, (ten minutes from now.) My mind has been a blank for two days.
Normally, I treasure this opportunity to share thoughts and ideas with you. I don’t think there is great wisdom here. I sort of think of it as cheer leading. My hope is to continually build up the parish into a living breathing walking talking temple of the Holy Spirit. The Spirit’s work demands that we do our part in being the Body of Christ for each other and the worlds in which we live. How?
In a couple of editorials on hot button issues I read recently, the thought running through all of them, no matter what position was being advanced, was that people (WE the people) need to do much better jobs of communicating with each other, with a liberal dose of listening as a key ingredient of the recipe.
It also means we build bridges that have been damaged or absent to people who have been in our lives and maybe aren’t so present anymore.
SO, I am going to leave the rest of this space to create an extra moment RIGHT NOW when you can write to someone who needs a word from you. DON’T SCRIBBLE IT ON THE BACK OF A CHRISTMAS CARD. Either put it on a separate piece of paper and enclose it, or mail it by itself. It will be Jesus writing...
