Autumn Restored

msgrfetscherDear Family,
Last week exploded with one momentous event after another. I won’t list them because you were there, too. Sometimes, I wanted to turn everything off or shut everything down. The only trouble is, you can do that for a while, but eventually you have to deal with all the ‘stuff.’

Annie will be taking a well-deserved break soon in a month or so. (Don’t ask for details. We get too nosy. Just pray she has a good time and a safe return.)

Annie came to mind because as I was writing about shutting things down, I remembered something! While Annie is away, I volunteered to invite “Honey” into the rectory. (Just in case someone needs clarity about it, Honey is Annie’s dog.)

I also remembered that when Honey is running in tight little circles and refuses a treat it means only one thing. Whether I want to hide or shut down, it won’t make a whisker of a difference. HONEY NEEDS SOME GRASS! AND IT’S NOT THE KIND YOU SMOKE! NOW!!!

God’s yapping little creatures need care, too. They are a part of our world. Our (and Pope Francis’s) “intrinsic ecological conversion” must include them as well. Ironically, I wonder if we take better care of our pets than our environment.

We certainly have been part of the sadness surrounding the death of Queen Elizabeth. Surely over 70 years, there were huge events and challenges that affected the course of the world’s history. She was often part of those events, the good and the bad. But as we have seen the history retold, my impression is that she was a person of grace and dependability. That’s not a bad epitaph.

When people think of that, sadness yields to hope. That’s what we wish for her son, Charles III, as well as the people of Great Britain.

As October nears, two important things are on our plates. October is Respect Life month. The back of this bulletin has the details for the “40 Days for Life.” Hopefully, some of you will be able to join some of the events.

Next week, we will publish the list of things that you can bring for the Baby Bassinet during October.

And THEN, on top of those things we look forward to our annual celebration of Oktoberfest! The flyer in this week’s bulletin has details about how you can help with sponsorships and ads in the Oktoberfest Program.

That program has traditionally also been a wonderful mini cookbook with recipes that many of you contribute. Pull out your favorite recipe and submit it to Annie, a.s.a.p. The Pastoral Council folk are working to obtain ads. Will you help them if you know someone who would like an ad?

A special thanks to Liz Calhoun who walks the organizational road with Annie to make the Program appear!

During Oktoberfest, I used to sponsor a climbing wall, but instead, this year we will have some supervised kids’ activities.

(To be honest getting that close to the “e” word made me nervous, anyway. Some people have bad four-letter words they need to avoid. My avoidance word has eight letters, beginning and ending with “e”.)

I titled this Twitch Autumn Restored. I realized many of our activities are things we haven’t done in a while. A little restoration will bless us. I hope and pray that we won’t face another resurgence of COVID 19. However, if it comes up again, at least we are better equipped to know what to do quickly. Meantime, I’ll dream of colored leaves. If you look carefully at palm trees, you can see them change a little, too, really! Happy Autumn!

In Jesus,
